This is the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS 992. It’s the most hard-core, track-focussed 911 you can buy and comes with brand-new, Formula One-inspired tech. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

The stripped-out, track-focussed Porsche 911 GT3 RS is back. This new 992-generation model packs a plethora of motorsport-inspired upgrades, including aerodynamic tweaks borrowed from Formula 1, new suspension components, chassis mods and a more powerful naturally aspirated engine.

Watch Mat’s video to learn everything you need to know about the new 911 GT3 RS.

New Porsche 911 GT3 RS design

The new Porsche 911 GT3 RS is as lairy-looking as the standard 911 is sensible and staid. It’s covered in aerodynamic flicks and fins inspired by the GT3 R racing car and comes with a 997-inspired look-at-me red livery.

The new front splitter, bonnet vents, side skirts, vertical fins all play their part in producing as much downforce as possible, but the star of the show is the new rear wing.

It’s the largest ever fitted to a roadgoing 911 and the first to ever extend above the car’s roof.

It’s also fitted with an F1-style drag-reduction system (DRS) that uses hydraulic rams to open and close a wing flap that helps boost top speed or increase downforce.

Activate this using a button on the steering wheel and the new GT3 RS will offload some of its 860kg total downforce to help you hit a 184mph top speed.

New Porsche 911 GT3 RS engine and performance

The new GT3 RS uses a similar 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six engine as the GT3.

New camshafts help it feel snappier at high revs (the redline doesn’t curtail your fun until you hit 9,000rpm) and boost power from 510hp in the GT3 to 525hp in this RS model.

The seven-speed dual-clutch PDK gearbox is similar to the optional automatic ‘box you can get in the GT3 (there’s no manual option in the new RS) but Porsche has fitted a shorter final-drive ratio to boost acceleration in all seven gears.

Porsche claims it’ll hit 60-mph from rest in 3.2 seconds. That’s the same as the outgoing 991.2 GT3 RS and 0.2 seconds quicker than the new GT3.

Watch the video below to see just how quick that car REALLY is…

However, you can take that figure with an unhealthily large pinch of salt – Porsche usually undersells the performance of these cars and it’s likely the 911 GT3 RS will crack the all-important 0-60mph sprint in close to 2.7 seconds.

New Porsche 911 GT3 RS interior

The new GT3 RS comes with a similar interior to the latest GT3 – with a few tasty upgrades, of course. These include carbon-fibre sports seats as standard and a new steering wheel with added buttons for controlling the car’s new adaptive suspension.

If you fancy yourself as a car-setup savant, you can alter the compression and rebound damping of each axle individually and tweak the settings of the standard rear limited-slip differential.

You can also get a steel roll cage as part of the no-cost Clubsport Pack, or ditch this in favour of a lighter carbon-fibre cage in the Weissach pack. This also adds unpainted carbon fibre body panels and optional magnesium alloy wheels.

New Porsche 911 GT3 RS price and release date

The new Porsche 911 GT3 RS is on sale now. It costs from £178,500. That’s over £40,000 more than the GT3 costs and it’s almost £10,000 more than a 911 Turbo S. The optional Weissach Pack adds almost £26,000 (if you spec it with the fancy carbon cage).

Unlike other special-edition Porsche models (such as the Sport Classic) the 911 GT3 RS production run isn’t limited to a set number of cars. You might not need to know the special Porsche handshake to get yourself a build slot, then…
